HISTORY
A Primitive Methodist Church in the 'grand manner' was first built on this site in 1903. The town's Wesleyan Methodist Church in the meantime, moved from its original chapel, building a fine new sanctuary in Newgate Street in 1914. These two Church societies came together in 1993, as 'Bishop Auckland Methodist Church', concentrating their worship, service and witness at Cockton Hill, extending and modernising the original premises to meet the needs of the present age. Meanwhile, the premises in Newgate Street, were taken over by a voluntary charitable organisation, 'Bishop Auckland Community Partnership', and the Newgate Street Church was redeveloped to become a 'one-stop help centre', now known as the Four Clocks Centre, the home of a number of charitable and caring organisations working in the town.
