HISTORY
St. Peter's Parish Church was built in 1875 at a time when the town was expanding rapidly. The architect was R. J. Johnson who was responsible for converting Newcastle Parish Church to the now known Newcastle Cathedral. St. Peter's is a Grade 2 Listed Building. The organ was built by Harrison And Harrison, who also built those in Durham and Coventry Cathedral as well as the organ at the Royal Festival Hall. The reredos, the wooden carved panel behind the Alter, was given by Bishop Lightfoot and is similar to that which can be found inside the Bishop's Chapel, within the grounds of the Bishop's Palace Estate also in Bishop Auckland. There are a few famous people, which have been connected with the church over the years. Stan Laurel, one half of the comic team Laurel and Hardy, and who is still to this day seen as somewhat of an icon of our town, was received into the church at St. Peter's. Another famous connection is that of Sir Edward Elgar, who being friendly with the then organist to the church, Nicolas Kilburn, had his work, 'The Music Makers', first performed at the church in 1910.
