HISTORY
St. Wilfrid's Church was built in 1846. Prior to this, priests of the Jesuit
order from Durham served Catholics in Bishop Auckland.
The Catholic population of Bishop Auckland grew greatly with the arrival of Irish immigrants to provide labour for new industry in the area.
St. Wilfrid's was the main Catholic parish in the area for almost 100 years until parishes were created in St. Helen’s Auckland and the Woodhouse Close estate in the 1950's.
Today, St. Wilfrid's is the smaller of the two Catholic parishes in Bishop Auckland with around 140 parishioners on average attending Sunday Mass out of an estimated Catholic population of 600. The parish shares its priest with St. Mary's in Bishop Auckland and St. Paulinus in St. Helen’s Auckland.
