HISTORY
The Church has until 2003 been known as the Bishop Auckland Assemblies of God Pentecostal Church.

The Pentecostal movement in Britain began in a Parish Church in Sunderland in 1907 when many in the congregation experienced the filing of the Holy Spirit and spoke in tongues as the believers did on the Day of Pentecost as recorded in the New Testament in Acts chapter 2.

The Bishop Auckland Church began in 1927 with a small group of Christians meeting at Witton Park and praying for a move of God in Bishop Auckland. Pastor Stephen Jeffreys was invited to hold meetings in Bishop Auckland Town Hall. Meetings went on from February to April 1927 with many people finding Jesus as both saviour and healer. The meetings, the healings and the message of salvation through Jesus Christ gripped the town and area during that period.

Immediately after Stephen Jefferys series of meetings ended the Bishop Auckland Church was established, meeting initially in the Temperance Hall under the joint leadership of Pastor Entwistle and Miss Frost. Over that period the Church became established under Assemblies of God and many of the young men in the early congregations went on to lead and establish Churches in Great Britain and beyond. This trend of Bishop Auckland producing both Pastors and Missionaries has continued throughout the life of the Church.

By 1934 the Church had its own premises in Railway Street however during the war years the Army commandeered the building leaving the Church again without its own premises. The Salvation Army helped out by allowing use of its premises. Following use of other rented accommodation the Church purchased the premises in South Church Road with the Assembly being officially opened in 1949.

The Church having seen building projects in the 1980's and 1990's to increase the buildings capacity now stands at the beginning of a new Millennium looking again for a new move of God in Bishop Auckland and beyond.

Following the retirement of Pastor Jim Briton in 2002, Pastor David Parry has taken up leadership of the Church. David spent his teenage years in Bishop Auckland during the period his father was Pastor of the Assembly.

In 2003 the name of the Church has been changed to Wear Valley Christian Centre, a name which is seen to better reflect our vision for the future - to see the Durham Dales won for Jesus.
